Bohol Earns Philippines’ First UNESCO Global Geopark

Bohol Island, home of the renowned Chocolate Hills, has been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the Philippines’ first global geopark, a prestigious recognition that celebrates Bohol’s rich geological and cultural wonders. Bohol now joins a roster of 195 locations in 48 countries worldwide that have earned the esteemed title of a global geopark.

UNESCO described Bohol as a geopark abundant “in karstic geosites such as caves, sinkholesand cone karst, including the famous cone-shaped Chocolate Hills in the centre of the geopark.”

Among Bohol’s prized gems is the Danajon Double Barrier Reef, which UNESCO acclaimed as one of its kind in Southeast Asia and one of the only six known double-barrier reefs in the world. This magnificent reef, formed through tidal currents and coral growth, is home to a plethora of marine life.

Bohol’s allure also extends inland, where the majestic Can-umantad waterfalls, the tallest in the province, also received praise. Towering at 60-foot-high, these three-tiered waterfalls cascade down a series of boulders amid lush vegetation, creating a cool and refreshing pool at its base. Among the province’s geological sites include Loon-Maribojoc Uplifted Marine Terrace, Hinagdanan Cave, Princess Manan-aw Cave, Batungay Cave, Lamanok Point/Island, Cave Pools of Anda, and Alicia Panoramic Park.

Bohol’s inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geopark marked a significant feat for the Philippines as it highlights the island province’s stunning natural wonders. These attractions play a vital role in sustaining local communities by promoting sustainable tourism initiatives aimed at preserving their geological treasures.

Bohol’s well-deserved recognition stands as a testament to the Philippines’ unrivaled splendor, enticing tourists to embark on a memorable journey through its breathtaking terrain.
